In the run up to Small Business Saturday Graham has been behind the counter at shops and businesses across the area, learning for himself about the everyday challenges they face.
Small and independent businesses are the life blood of our towns and villages. Across this area we are lucky to have some fabulous independent shops, and it’s great to be able to promote these during Small Business Saturday on 6th December.
"The government believes in supporting small businesses as it's these businesses which are helping to make the economy stronger," said Graham, "We have done various things to help, such as cutting corporation tax for businesses, reducing the burden of employment law so businesses are more likely to take on new people, and we've doubled the rate relief threshold so that 385,000 small business now pay no business rates at all.”
In addition and to help promote the event, Graham is currently undertaking a series of 'Graham behind the counter' sessions at businesses including Vintage Tea Rooms in Helsby and Cherry Bomb Hairdressers in Frodsham and he’s already done a shift at Frodsham’s Devonshire Bakery.
"I can talk about small businesses, I can promote, help and support them as much as possible," said Graham, "but I wanted the opportunity to actually get my hands dirty as it were, and be at the front line of these businesses learning about the everyday challenges they face. At the Devonshire Bakery, they set me to work helping to make mince pies, which brought back memories of one of my earliest jobs when I worked in a bakery getting up at the crack of dawn to bake the bread! It gave me the opportunity to chat to them about some of issues they face as owners of a small business. It was very useful, and I fed back comments on all manner of things directly to the Minister.”
Small Business Saturday is a chance to highlight the importance of these businesses both to the local community but also to the national economy. To highlight their contribution, Graham is running a competition giving residents the chance to nominate their favourite small business - entries are being accepted until 4th December, and can be submitted by post to Graham Evans MP, The Bungalow, Sheath Street, Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 5BH, telephone on 01606 350 323 or by email to [email protected].
