Graham Evans MP raised the new unemployment figures at Prime Minister’s Question Time today, 4 September.
Speaking following figures showing that Weaver Vale has the lowest unemployment rate since Graham Evans became the Member of Parliament in May 2010, David Cameron confirmed that employment figures show that the economy is back on track.
Graham Evans MP said: "Across Weaver Vale there were 1,982 Job Seeker Allowance (JSA) claimants in July 2013 compared to 2,290 in July 2013 and 2,091 in May 2010. That is a 4.5% rate compared to the North West average of 5.2%.
"Youth unemployment (18-24 year olds claiming jobseekers allowance) has also dropped to 8% from 9.8% in July 2012 and from 8.6% in May 2010.
"These statistics show that that the Government are on the right track to get Britain's economy moving and generate higher levels of employment. I am proud that steps in my constituency, such as running two Jobs Fairs with planning underway for a third and apprenticeship schemes can demonstrate the opportunities that are out there."
Graham Evans: Unemployment in my constituency is lower than at any time since the 2010 general election. Locally, I have organised two successful jobs fairs and we are organising a third. Does my right hon. Friend agree that that goes to show that the Government are right to stick to the economic plan, despite calls to abandon it by Opposition Members?
The Prime Minister: My hon. Friend is absolutely right. The figures on employment are encouraging. There are more people in work in our country than ever before and more people in private sector employment than ever before; there is a record number of women in work in our country; and there are almost 1 million more people in work compared with the situation we inherited.
