Halton’s two MPs have been showing their support for a permanent memorial to a borough war hero, as it was revealed the campaign is about to go online.
Halton Labour MP Derek Twigg and Weaver Vale Conservative counterpart Graham Evans – whose constituency covers East Runcorn – joined the Todger Jones VC memorial appeal committee at its meeting held at Halton Royal British Legion.
The pair were told about a new website project in the quest to build a permanent 6ft bronze statue to Runcorn VC winner Pvt Thomas Alfred ‘Todger’ Jones, who was awarded Britain’s highest military honour for capturing 102 Germans at Morval during the First World War.
Campaign founder Tony Miller said: “The appeal will be starting a new website with a PayPal connection for donations, and to explain what the appeal is about and what Todger did to earn his VC. People will be able to leave their views about the appeal and hopefully support it, and make a donation, large or small; every penny collected goes directly to the appeal. There are no expenses, taken out, everything is voluntary.”
